What medications are used?

Semaglutide, a weekly subcutaneous injection which slows the GI tract function and improves insulin regulation.

Semaglutide was FDA approved in 2021 for obesity and has been prescribed for diabetes since 2017.

Terzepatide works in the same way as Semaglutide, with the added benefit of aiding in lipolysis (fat burning).

Semaglutide and Terzepatide help stabilize your blood sugar. They target multiple receptors throughout the body related to appetite and hunger. The combination of these mechanisms reduces appetite which reduces hunger and leads to weight loss.

BioBoost is a mixture of amino acids and B vitamins. BioBoost has been shown to increase energy, decrease GI side effects, provide greater mental clarity, and increase fat burn. BioBoost is an optional add-on for many of our patients.

What are the possible side effects?

These medications may have mild side effect which are easily managed. Most common issues are fatigue and GI issues.

Semi-Permanent Fillers | EK Plastic Surgery

Semi-Permanent Fillers

Semi-permanent fillers can be customized by Dr. Erin Kennedy to offer a refined facial appearance. Fillers can improve lost volume while creating better structure and support in the soft tissue under the skin while softening lines and creating a natural look and feel.

Schedule a consultation

Age, weight changes, smoking, and sun exposure can all contribute to developing lines and wrinkles. There are several classes of FDA-approved fillers which can be used in many areas. A consultation with Dr. Erin Kennedy will help you determine which product is right for you.

Areas treated with semi-permanent fillers include:

  • Lip volume
  • Vertical lipstick lines
  • Downturned corners of the mouth
  • Flat cheekbones
  • Lines between the nose and mouth
  • Under-eye bags
  • Frown lines
  • Contour deformities & scars
  • Facial asymmetry (unevenness)

What to Expect

Semi-permanent fillers are a safe, in-office injection with little downtime. Bruising and swelling is variable and is minimized by avoiding Aspirin containing products for 5-7 days before your injections, using ice for 24-48 hours after injection, and avoiding cardio exercise for 2-3 days. Results are immediately apparent (and can appear exaggerated for the first 2-3 weeks if swelling occurs). The biggest concern with semi-permanent fillers is bruising and swelling, although there is the possibility of blood vessel injection which can cause skin loss, vision changes, and the need for further treatment. The best way to minimize these risks is to make sure you are being treated by a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon rather than a variable trained aesthetician or nurse injector. You deserve the added safety a physician provides!

Types of Fillers

Hyaluronic Acid Fillers provide a natural soft fill which is very uncommonly felt under the skin

Juvederm Ultra® is an FDA-approved semi-permanent filler used to restore volume lost by aging, weight loss, or volume that you may have never had but have always desired. Juvederm Ultra® is used primarily to restore volume around the mouth, lips, and between the mouth and jawline.

Voluma® is the stiffest of the Juvederm fillers. Voluma® is used to restore (or add) volume to the cheekbones or cheek areas. Voluma lasts 15-18 months.

Vollure® is very effective in ‘putty’ the lines of the face, around the mouth, lips, or chin without adding volume. It can last up to 18 months in some patients.

Volbella® is the ‘thinnest’ of the fillers and can erase small lines without adding volume. It is commonly used to erase the ‘smokers’ lines around the mouth. We like to refer to Volbella as the ‘icing on the cake’.

Calcium Hydroxyapatite / Radiesse® contains small microspheres used to form support deep within the tissues for a more youthful appearance and natural results. Radiesse® offers deep fill correction to the cheek bones, under eye tear trough (eye bags - closer to the nose), and sometimes in the lower corners of the mouth and chin. Radiesse lasts 18-20 months.

Mommy Makeover

A Mommy Makeover refers to combining multiple procedures such as breast augmentation and tummy tuck to improve self-confidence and body image after pregnancy. The procedures are tailored to each patient’s goals for her “makeover.”

Schedule a consultation

What is a Mommy Makeover?

A ‘Mommy Makeover’ is a combination of procedures to address both tummy and breasts. After children, many women are unhappy with the appearance of these areas (because of changes during pregnancy and breastfeeding) and addressing them can restore (or improve) your earlier appearance. A Mommy Makeover is tailored to address your specific concerns.

A tummy tuck or liposuction are the most common options to address the tummy. CoolSculpting may also be used.

Breast augmentation, breast lift or reduction are usually combined with the abdominal procedure to provide overall improvement.

Who considers a Mommy Makeover?

Women who are unhappy with the appearance of their abdomen and breast after pregnancy often consider a Mommy Makeover. Some women without children undergo the same combination of procedures to lessen the changes of normal aging and ‘a life well lived’.

Good candidates are healthy women who:

  • Are in good physical shape
  • Are done having children
  • Have a stable body weight.

What is a tummy tuck?

A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, removes excess skin and smooths a loose, stretched out belly by tightening the muscles of the abdominal wall. Depending on the degree of contour and skin problems - incisions are placed low and also around the belly button. The goal is to give a flatter, smoother abdominal contour. If skin is a problem on the abdomen, a tummy tuck will better address this problem than liposuction or CoolSculpting alone.

What is liposuction?

Liposuction, also known as lipoplasty or suction lipectomy, is a procedure that sculpts the body by removing unwanted fat from specific areas, creating a more desirable contour. While liposuction improves shape related to fatty deposits, it does not change muscle tone or sagging skin. Expectations and goals are discussed during your consultation. If there is good muscle tone and no extra skin, liposuction can be a great option.

What is a breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation is more than simply enlarging the breasts. Breast augmentation offers customization that produces a look that is natural, balanced and beautiful. The operation is more popular now than at any time in its history. Breast augmentation does not correct drooping or the position of the nipples, so your goals will be addressed at your consultation.

What is a breast lift?

Breast lift, also called mastopexy, is designed to reshape the breast, and elevate the nipple & areola to a more youthful position. Breast tissue is generally not removed so there is only a small chance of change in nipple sensation. Breast lift is often combined with breast augmentation when the breasts appear “deflated” and you desire more fullness. Breast lift can also include a small reduction in volume if you feel your breasts are larger than you would like.

Where is the procedure performed?

Surgery is usually performed at Plastic Surgery Aesthetic’s nationally accredited surgical suite. Surgery may be performed at a local surgery center depending on individual health status

Anesthesia providers monitor your heart & lungs and keep you comfortable during surgery

What is normal recovery?

Recovery varies based on what surgeries are performed. This will be discussed at your consultation, and more information can be found in the areas for each specific procedure you are considering.

What are the expected results?

An improved balance between breast and body is the usual outcome. Improved self confidence and body image are common findings after a Mommy Makeover.

Patients who intend to lose significantly more weight, or plan future pregnancies, should discuss these issues at the consultation so you understand what effect these could have on your long term results.

Are there potential complications?

All procedures come with some potential risks. The majority of these are minor. Smoking increases your risk for numerous complications and may lead to your surgery being canceled. General risks of any surgical procedure can be found on our information page by clicking HERE.

Laser Treatments | EK Plastic Surgery

Laser Treatments

Lasers are used for many different applications in medicine. Light/superficial lasers require no down time and can offer dramatic improvements in the tone, texture, and appearance of the skin. Deeper/ablative lasers have some downtime but can address deeper pigmentation and moderate lines or wrinkles. Dr. Kennedy uses the Sciton family of lasers in her practice.

Schedule a consultation

BroadBand Light (BBL)

BBL is an innovative technology that sets new standards for skin conditions associated with aging, active life-styles, and sun damage. BBL light energy allows Dr. Kennedy  to precisely treat many skin conditions. Your treatment will be tailored to match your skin type and desired results. BBL is used to reduce/ remove:

  • Pigment (age/sun spots)
  • Blood vessels / Rosacea
  • Unwanted hair
  • SkinTyte - Improves the tone & texture of the neck and jawline skin with minor skin tightening
  • Tyte & Brite - improves reds & browns of the face and neck while adding a ‘glow’ and improvement in the tone & texture as well.
  • Acne

Ablative/Deeper Lasers

Deeper lasers effectively address fine to moderate wrinkles, pigmentation and offer skin tightening. 4-10 days of downtime are required (depending on the depth of treatment chosen) and sun avoidance is required for 4-6 weeks after treatment.

MLP (MicroLaserPeel)

MicroLaserPeel precisely removes a thin layer of damaged skin to improve texture and provide a more youthful appearance. The procedure is performed in our office and can be custom-tailored to your specific skin conditions and desired outcome. This is an ablative laser that does require some downtime. Downtime that is needed for this procedure depends on how deep of a treatment you are needing or wanting. Downtime can range from 3-10 days. MLP is often paired with profractional for best results.

MLP is great for treating:

  • Pigmentation
  • Moles
  • Lines/wrinkles

ProFractional

Profractional Therapy is best used for tightening and improving areas of skin laxity. It is a quick and comfortable laser procedure with little downtime. Profractional is often used on the undereye sink as well as the skin around the mouth. The procedure is performed in your physician’s office and can be custom-tailored to your specific skin conditions and desired outcome. Profractional laser is often paired with Microlaser Peel for best effects.

ProFractional uses a tiny laser beam to treat thousands of pinpoint areas of your skin. Because only a fraction of your skin is directly treated with the laser, the surrounding untreated tissue promotes rapid healing. This skin’s wound healing response created new collagen which adds firmness and resilience to the skin. If a deep treatment is desired we discuss using anesthesia to aid in comfort during the treatment.

Aftercare

To obtain optimal results with MLP and profractional laser treatments we encourage you to strictly follow the aftercare instructions. Following MLP and profractional it is necessary to keep a layer of aquaphor or vaseline on your treatment area until the skin is healed. This is generally 3-10 days depending on the extent/depth of the treatment. Following the recommendations of Dr. Kennedy regarding aftercare and sun exposure on a consistent basis is necessary for the best results.

Facelift

A facelift is a surgical procedure to restore a rested, youthful contour to the jawline, neck and cheeks. It can help you look as good as you feel! Dr. Kennedy personalizes your procedure and may recommend other modalities to optimize your results. Dr. Kennedy believes in a natural effect, without a tight or unnatural appearance.

Schedule a consultation

Who considers a facelift?

Men and women who see a “worn out” face due to loosening and sagging of the lower face and neck often consider a facelift. Age and gravity may have contributed to:

  • Sagging of the cheeks causing creases between the nose and mouth
  • A jawline that is less defined or has excess skin/ jowls
  • A neck with hanging, wrinkling, or excess skin

These are normal changes resulting from gravity, genetics, sun exposure, smoking, and stress. The best candidates are patients with good skin elasticity and a strong underlying bone structure.

What is a facelift?

A facelift, or rhytidectomy, is intended to rejuvenate the lower face and neck. By re-draping and removing excess skin, tightening underlying tissues, and removing excess fat from the neck and cheeks, a facelift refines the jawline, neck, and cheeks. Other procedures are often added to improve the appearance of the eyes, forehead, or upper lip. These can enhance the improvements seen from a facelift alone.

Be sure to address your expectations and goals during consultation. There are different techniques available that are individualized to help meet your needs. These differ in the extent of incisions, the tissues elevated, and recovery time.

Goals of facelifts:

  • More youthful appearance
  • More defined jawline
  • More pleasing neck contour
  • Softening of lines and shadowing between the cheeks and mouth area
  • Minimizing excess skin

How is the procedure performed?

  • Incisions are made running from the side-burns around the ear and into the hairline. An incision is also made under the chin.
  • The muscles of the neck and face are tightened and suspended in a more youthful position. Excess tissues are trimmed and sutured.
  • Surgery is performed using general anesthesia and is most often performed in the office OR suite with patients returning home the same day.
  • Some patients choose to have surgery at the hospital and stay overnight. The surgery takes 4 to 6 hours depending on the extent of the surgery.
  • Eyelid surgery or forehead lift is often performed at the same time as rhytidectomy. Botox® , Juvederm, or Radiesse are often used as well to enhance results.

What is normal recovery?

Bulky bandages and a small drainage tube are removed the day following surgery, and then a light elastic bandage is worn for the first 7 to 10 days. Patients use ice and sleep with their head elevated for the first week to minimize swelling and bruising. Prescription medications are used to relieve pain and anxiety. Bruising and swelling subside within 2 to 3 weeks. Patients are back to work in about 3 weeks although some patients have extended swelling or bruising, and longer periods off work are not unexpected. Upper body, aerobic and more vigorous activity can be resumed in about 4 weeks.

What are the expected results?

Most patients are very happy with the more youthful, rested appearance following a facelift, especially if they are realistic in their expectations and goals. Results can be optimized by combining procedures and being very careful to follow post-operative instructions. While a facelift does not stop aging it can ‘set back’ the clock to lessen many of the visible features which give a tired or aged appearance. Remember that even years later, you’ll continue to look better than if you’d never had a facelift.

Are there potential complications?

All surgery carries some risk. Poor healing of the skin is most likely to affect smokers. In general, complications are infrequent and usually minor. Still, individuals vary greatly in their anatomy, their physical reactions, their healing abilities, and the outcome is never completely predictable. General risks of any surgical procedure can be found on our information page by clicking HERE.

Complications specific to Facelift may include:

  • Residual skin or tissues (incomplete removal of all excess skin)
  • Asymmetry (uneven between the two sides)
  • Scars
  • Tissue loss or delayed healing
  • Numbness
  • Continued aging

CoolSculpting®

CoolSculpting® is the first FDA-cleared technology to selectively remove fat without surgery, scars, and little to no downtime. Patented cooling technology is used to safely, comfortably and effectively target unwanted fatty deposits. Treatments are tailored to your individual concerns and Dr. Kennedy personally evaluates and plans the optimal treatment regimen to address your problem areas. Treatments are performed in our state-of-the-art office and you can resume normal activity immediately after treatment.

Am I a good candidate?

Good candidates have noticeable bulges in certain areas they’d like to remove. The CoolSculpting fat reduction procedure is specifically designed for those who have unwanted fat that resists diet and exercise. Unlike gastric bypass surgery, the CoolSculpting procedure is not a weight loss solution for people who are obese. It is, however a non-surgical alternative to liposuction. Request a one-on-one consultation with us to determine if the CoolSculpting procedure is right for you.

How much does the CoolSculpting procedure cost?

The price for CoolSculpting procedures varies depending on your areas of concern, the number of sessions needed, and your ultimate goals. We will help create a customized treatment plan, in person, that’s tailored to your body, your goals, and your budget.

How long is each session? How many sessions will I need?

The length of your CoolSculpting session will vary depending on the number of areas being treated during one visit. We may schedule additional sessions in order to meet your goals.

Where does the fat go? Are the results permanent?

Once the treated fat cells are crystallized (frozen), your body processes the fat and eliminates these dead cells. Once the treated fat cells are gone, they’re gone for good.

What does it feel like?

As the cooling begins during the first few minutes, you will feel pressure and intense cold. This soon dissipates. Many people read, watch videos, work on their laptop, or even take a nap during their treatment.

Are there any side effects?

During the procedure you may experience deep pulling, tugging, pinching, numbness or discomfort. Following the procedure, side effects may include temporary numbness, redness, swelling, bruising, firmness, tingling, stinging, and pain. Rare side effects may also occur. The CoolSculpting procedure is not for everyone. You should not have the CoolSculpting procedure if you suffer from cryoglobulinemia or paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria. The CoolSculpting procedure is not a treatment for obesity. As with any medical procedure, ask us if the CoolSculpting procedure is right for you.

Can I return to normal activities after my treatment?

Yes, you can. The CoolSculpting procedure is completely non-surgical, so typically you can return to normal activities immediately. Oftentimes, patients return to work after their CoolSculpting session is over.

When will I see results?

You may start to see changes as quickly as three weeks after your treatment, and will experience the most dramatic results after two months. But your body will still flush out fat cells and continues doing so for up to four to six months after treatment.

Do I need to take special supplements or follow a strict diet and exercise program?

No supplements or pills are required and you do not have to adopt new diet and exercise habits. Many patients feel more motivated to take care of themselves after their CoolSculpting treatment. It is as if they get a second lease on their body and want to start anew again by taking even better care of themselves.

What happens if I gain weight down the road?

Many people, after seeing the results from their CoolSculpting procedure, take even better care of themselves. However, if you do gain weight, you may gain it evenly all over your body, not just in the treated areas.

For additional information, visit the CoolSculpting website.

Breast Lift

Breasts come in all shapes and sizes - there is not a single procedure to improve every breast contour concern. Dr. Kennedy believes that understanding your goals and expectations is critical to discussing and developing a plan to correct your area of concern. Dr. Kennedy uses multiple procedures, approaches and techniques to individualize your procedure to your goal!

Schedule a consultation

Who considers a breast lift?

Over time, breasts can become saggy, deflated, elongated and lose the youthful shape and volume most women desire. Women interested in reversing the below life changes and who are seeking  a more youthful, firmer, and possibly fuller appearance consider breast lift. Life events negatively affecting the appearance of the breasts include:

  • Pregnancy
  • Breast feeding
  • Weight changes
  • Gravity
  • Loss of skin elasticity with age

What is a breast lift?

Breast lift, also called mastopexy, is designed to reshape the breast, and elevate the nipple & areola to a more youthful position. Breast tissue is generally not removed so there is only a small chance of change in nipple sensation. Breast lift is often combined with breast augmentation when the breasts appear “deflated” and you desire more fullness. Breast lift can also include a small reduction in volume if you feel your breasts are larger than you would like.

Goals of breast lift include:

  • Lovely breasts in a more youthful position on your chest
  • Nipples properly positioned rather than pointing at the floor
  • Perky
  • Better projection and symmetry between uneven, droopy breasts
  • Enhanced volume with improved contour as well
  • A more natural & youthful appearance

How is the procedure performed?

  • Surgery is generally performed in our nationally accredited surgical suite.
  • Anesthesia providers monitor your heart & lungs and keep you comfortable during surgery
  • A variety of incisions may be used depending on your goals as well as your individual breast shape, volume, and droop. These are reviewed in-depth during consultation.
  • Excess skin is removed and the breast tissue, nipple & areola are raised to a higher, more pleasing position.
  • Surgery is performed under general anesthesia and patients return home the same day. Surgery takes approximately 2-3 hours.
  • Breast Lift can be performed with Breast Augmentation or may include a small Breast Reduction.

What is normal recovery?

Most patients return to work in approximately 1 week. Patients generally experience minimal discomfort, which is relieved with prescription medications or Tylenol and ice packs. There may be minor bruising and swelling. Most women are back to most daily activities within 7 to 10 days, and unrestricted activity within 4 to 6 weeks.

What are the expected results?

Results are tailored to individual goals and desires. More shapely, attractive breasts are the usual result. Patients see better proportions, a more feminine shape, improved self-esteem, and self-confidence. When larger breasts are desired in addition to an improved shape, breast implants can be added to enhance the overall effect.

Are there potential complications?

Breast lift surgery is very common and very safe, but no surgery is without potential problems. These are generally minor. Smoking increases your risk for numerous complications and may lead to your surgery being canceled. An extensive review of potential outcomes can be found on our information page by clicking HERE.

Complications specific to breast lift may include:

  • change in nipple sensation (increased, decreased, or numb)
  • possible effect on future lactation (breast feeding) and/or mammogram
  • future breast growth (if young) or volume loss (with age or weight loss)
  • uneven shape or size between the breasts
  • Scarring

Additional FAQs

Do you remove breast tissue?

During a breast lift a small amount of lower (drooping) breast tissue may be removed. This can improve the shape of the breasts and provide a more youthful, elevated breast. Some patients want smaller breasts when they are lifted. In these instances, Dr. Kennedy will remove more tissue to result in a smaller breast. At other times a small implant may also be added if you are interested in a slightly fuller (and elevated) breast.

Do you disconnect the nipple?

Dr. Kennedy leaves the nipple attached to its blood supply, nerve supply, and the ducts of the breast in all but very unusual cases. This gives the best chance to maintain nipple sensation and the option to breastfeed after a breast lift if desired. Rarely, circumstances require the nipple to be removed and repositioned - these are discussed with the patient at their consultation.

How noticeable are the scars?

All scars start more pink, raised, and firm and with time they soften, flatten and whiten. How a scar heals is a combination of how the incisions are closed (your surgery), patient factors (age, genetics, race), and post-operative care of your surgical site. With time the breast scars tend to ‘disappear’ and are only noticeable on close inspection.

What happens if I gain or lose weight?

All breasts contain both breast tissue and fat. With weight changes - the fatty portion of the breast can increase (with weight gain) or shrink (with weight loss). A stable weight will ensure the best, longest-lasting results.

Liposuction | EK Plastic Surgery

Who considers liposuction?

Areas of fatty excess in the abdomen, flanks, upper or lower extremities, or under the chin can affect how clothing fits and how we see ourselves. Women & men of all shapes and sizes undergo liposuction, but patients near or at their normal weight, and without sagging skin, will experience the most satisfying, long-term results. Liposuction is not a solution to achieving weight loss.

Women and men with regional pockets of fat unresponsive to diet and exercise, who have firm, elastic skin are ideal candidates for liposuction.

Sometimes adding abdominoplasty (tummy tuck), breast surgery, or other body contouring procedures may increase the likelihood of achieving your goals.

Depending on your specific goals and your body composition  Abdominoplasty, CoolSculpting, Brachioplasty (bat wing reduction) or another procedure may be more effective in achieving them.

It is always important to have realistic expectations about what the procedure you are considering can achieve. Dr. Kennedy spends significant time during your consultation reviewing what is possible and what your goals are.

How is the procedure performed?

  • Surgery is generally performed in our nationally accredited surgical suite.
  • Anesthesia providers monitor your heart & lungs and keep you comfortable during surgery
  • Several very small incisions are made in inconspicuous locations (generally hidden in scars, creases or stretch marks).
  • A numbing solution is instilled for comfort and to make liposuction safer on the skin and tissues.
  • A hollow cannula attached to a suction machine is used to remove fat from the specific areas of concern.*
  • Liposuction can be performed at the same time as abdominoplasty,  breast augmentation, or other surgery.

What is normal recovery?

Patients wear compression garments to minimize swelling, improve comfort, and optimize skin retraction after surgery. Prescription medications are used during this time to relieve minor surgical pain. Patients are generally back to work in less than a week. More vigorous activity can be resumed in 2 to 3 weeks.

What are the expected results?

An improvement in proportions and contour is the usual result following liposuction. It may take up to a few months to see full results due to swelling. Most patients find that clothing fits better and that there is improved self-esteem and self-confidence. Individual skin retraction can be unpredictable and will affect results. Individual results may vary

The re-contoured body can still gain weight but usually in more normal proportions. Weight gain will alter results.

Are there potential complications?

Liposuction is a common surgery but no surgery is without potential risks. The majority of these are minor. Smoking increases your risk for numerous complications. General risks of any surgical procedure can be found on our information page by clicking HERE.

Liposuction does not remove all of the fat in the areas treated, and safety guidelines limit the amount of fat that can be removed. This can leave more fat in areas than you would desire. An uneven contour between sides and rippling (the appearance of fat) can be seen. Liposuction does not remove cellulite. Fluid or skin loss would be exceedingly rare. If multiple areas are being treated or significant fat is present - you might want to discuss if two sessions removing more fat from each area would provide results closer to your goal.

Additional FAQs

How much fat can you remove?

National guidelines limit removal to 5 liters of fat removal at each surgery. This is approximately 10# of fat and can make a dramatic change in shape and proportions. Dr. Kennedy will discuss this at your consultation.

Does liposuction remove cellulite?

Cellulite is a result of bands running from the muscle covering to the skin and individual fat cells pushing out past the fibrous bands. Liposuction may improve the appearance of some areas of cellulite - but liposuction is not a treatment of cellulite.

Can I achieve the same results with CoolSculpting?

CoolSculpting is a wonderful technology that can remove 20-25% of the fat without surgery and with little to no downtime. There are certainly advantages to CoolSculpting, but there are areas CoolSculpting cannot treat, you may need multiple sessions to achieve the results you can see with one session of liposuction and for larger areas. CoolSculpting can become more expensive (although for small areas it may be cheaper). A consultation to discuss your area(s) of concern will better answer this question for you.

How do I know if I need a tummy tuck or liposuction?

Liposuction does not change your muscle tone or skin appearance. If you are happy with your muscles and how your skin looks - liposuction may achieve your goals. If you prefer the look when you hold your tummy muscles tight and hate the sagging tummy skin, you will want to discuss a tummy tuck instead.

Dr. Kennedy uses techniques to minimize visible scarring and to correct excess skin, puffiness that lead to a tired, sad appearance.

Schedule a consultation

Who considers an Eyelid Lift?

The natural process of aging affects the delicate skin and muscles around the eyes. Sun exposure, smoking, weight fluctuations, and genetics also affect how the eyes look (and skin around the eyes). Healthy men and women consider blepharoplasty if they see their eyes as:

  • Tired
  • Angry
  • Sad
  • Appearing older than they feel
  • Drooping bags
  • Sagging lower eyelids
  • Significant skin of the upper eyelids which can be so severe that it impairs vision.

Those who smoke, have poorly controlled high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, or diabetes are NOT good candidates for this procedure. Others who may not be a good candidate for this surgery are those with diseases of the eye (glaucoma or detached retina).

What is an Eyelid Lift?

Blepharoplasty, also known as an eyelid lift, is a surgical procedure to remove excess skin and fat of the upper or lower eyelids. Dr. Kennedy strives to provide a more youthful, rested appearance to the eye area.

  • Creating a refreshed, youthful appearance to the eyes
  • Improving vision if significant skin
  • Helping provide the self-confidence that you look as good as you feel

Eyelid surgery can be performed alone or in conjunction with other procedures to obtain the beautiful results you desire without changing the natural expression or shape of your face.

How is the procedure performed?

  • Surgery is generally performed in our nationally accredited surgical suite. Surgery may be performed at a local surgery center depending on individual health status.
  • Local numbing medicine is normally used, although some patients prefer general anesthesia.
  • An incision in the upper eyelid crease or just under the lower eyelashes allows excess fat (puffiness) to be removed.
  • Skin is carefully re-draped and excess skin is removed.
  • Key sutures are placed to enhance a more youthful appearance around the eyes.
  • The surgery takes 1 to 2 hours and patients return home the same day.
  • Botox®, semi-permanent fillers, laser resurfacing, Forehead lift, face-lift can be performed at the same time as eyelid surgery and may enhance results.

What is normal recovery?

Sutures are removed in less than a week and most patients are back to work in 7 to 10 days. Patients use ice packs and maintain head elevation during the early post-operative period. Any minor discomfort is controlled with prescription medications or Tylenol. More vigorous activity is resumed in 4 to 5 weeks.

What are the expected results?

A more natural, rested, alert, and youthful contour to the eyes is the usual result. An improvement in vision can also be seen in certain circumstances. To prolong the results of your procedure it is important to maintain excellent skin care and avoid the sun when outside. To help maintain the long-term results of your surgery some non-surgical treatments are available.

What are non-surgical treatments that compliment my procedure?

Many patients add minimally invasive treatments, post-procedure, to enhance the results of their eyelid lift.

Are there potential complications?

Eyelid lift is a common surgery but no surgery is without potential risks. The majority of these are minor.  Smoking increases your risk for numerous complications and may lead to your surgery being canceled. General risks of any surgical procedure can be found on our information page by clicking HERE.

Complications specific to an eyelid tuck may include:

  • Unrecognized blood or fluid can lead to temporary or permanent vision change or loss IF NOT RECOGNIZED OR TREATED PROMPTLY
  • Turning out of the lower eyelids.

Issues which will be discussed at your consultation & pre-operative appointment that may affect your outcome, but which are not complications, they are results of your anatomy and aging.

  • If you are uneven prior to surgery and you may be afterwards as well.
  • Aging will continue.
  • Eyebrows contribute to the upper eyelid appearance. If they are not addressed, they will continue.
  • Dry eyes prior to surgery - they will continue to be dry.
  • Tearing after surgery is generally related to swelling and will resolve.

Additional FAQs

Will I need to have them redone?

After eyelid surgery, some people will go 15-20 years before they feel they have extra skin again, while others may see skin much sooner. This is sometimes due to the location of your eyebrows, where you are in relation to menopause, or what your goals are. Be sure to discuss this with Dr. Kennedy at your consultation.

Will eyelid surgery affect my glasses prescription?

Immediately after surgery, you may feel that your near prescription is slightly blurry. This is generally due to swelling. Do not change prescription within 4-8 weeks after surgery as it will generally drift back to baseline.

What procedures might compliment my results?

Sometimes Dr. Kennedy will discuss addressing your eyebrow position at the time of eyelid surgery. Fillers and Botox® can also improve the appearance around the eyes. Physician-grade SkinMedica skincare or laser resurfacing will prolong the results as well.

Breast Reduction

Schedule a consultation

Who considers a breast reduction?

Women with large breasts often suffer from a variety of medical problems due to the excess weight of their breasts. They may experience:

  • Back & neck pain
  • Skin moisture and irritation
  • Grooves from bra straps
  • Breathing problems.
  • An inability to lead an active lifestyle
  • Low self-esteem and a lack of confidence
  • Droopy, elongated breasts
  • Skeletal deformities

What is a breast reduction?

Breast reduction surgery leaves the breasts smaller, lighter, and firmer with the nipple at a more attractive and youthful position on the chest. Breasts are in better proportion with the rest of the woman’s body and usually help relieve many of the above medical symptoms.

How is the procedure performed?

  • Surgery may be performed in our nationally accredited surgical suite or in a local surgery center.
  • Anesthesia providers monitor your heart & lungs and keep you comfortable during surgery
  • Incisions are placed around the nipple and vertically to the lower breast crease that meets an incision curved under the breast.
  • Excess fat, breast tissue, and skin are removed. The remaining tissues are re-shaped in a more youthful contour and position.
  • Surgery is performed using general anesthesia. The surgery takes approximately 2.5 hours and patients return home the same day.
  • In almost all cases the nipple is left attached to its blood and nerve supply throughout the procedure (to better allow normal healing and sensation following surgery).

What is normal recovery?

Most patients return to work in about 2 weeks, depending on their job requirements. Discomfort is generally described as mild to moderate for the first 1 to 2 days. This can be relieved with prescription medications, Tylenol, and ice. Most women are back to most activities within 7 to 10 days with only “achy” discomfort. Most women are back to full, unrestricted activity within 4 to 6 weeks.

What are the expected results?

Most women experience an immediate reduction of physical symptoms, improved ability to exercise and participate in physical activity. The outcome is smaller, better-shaped breasts that are in proportion to the rest of the patient's body. There is typically a more symmetrical look to the breasts with nipples and areolas that are more naturally sized and positioned on the breast.

Are there potential complications?

Breast reduction surgery is very common and very safe, but no surgery is without potential problems. Smoking increases your risk for numerous complications and may lead to your surgery being canceled. General risks of any surgical procedure can be found on our information page by clicking HERE.

Complications specific to breast reduction may include:

  • Change in nipple sensation (increased, decreased, or numb)
  • Possible effect on future lactation (breastfeeding) and or mammogram
  • Future breast growth (if young) or volume loss (with age or weight loss)
  • Uneven shape or size between the breasts.

Additional FAQs

Can I breastfeed following surgery?

Following breast reduction surgery most women will lactate. You may or may not be able to full-nutrition breastfeed. Some women will pump and feed, some will supplement with formula and some will effectively breastfeed. If breastfeeding is important to you, be sure to discuss this with Dr. Kennedy at your consultation.

Will breast reduction surgery affect my nipple sensation?

90% of women have the same sensation following Breast Reduction surgery as they do prior. Some will notice an increase in sensation while some will have a decrease or numbness. It can take up to several years for full sensation to return after surgery.

What happens if I gain or lose weight?

Breasts are part breast tissue and part fat. With weight changes, the fatty part of the breasts will enlarge or shrink (the breast tissue portion of the breasts will not change).

Do you remove the nipple?

In almost all cases the nipple is left attached to its blood and nerve supply throughout the procedure to better allow normal healing and sensation following surgery.

Tummy Tuck | EK Plastic Surgery

Who considers a Tummy Tuck?

Women or men unhappy with the appearance of their abdomen often consider a tummy tuck (abdominoplasty). Changes from normal aging, weight fluctuations, pregnancy or previous surgery may produce the following changes which are addressed with an abdominoplasty:

  • Sagging skin
  • Stretch marks
  • Protruding muscles
  • Bulging or hanging fat

Good candidates are healthy women or men who:

  • Are in good physical shape
  • Decided to have no more children
  • Have a stable body weight

What is a tummy tuck?

A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, removes excess skin and smooths a loose, stretched out belly by tightening the muscles of the abdominal wall. Depending on the degree of contour and skin problems, incisions are placed low and also around the belly button. The goal is to give a flatter, smoother abdominal contour. If there are concerns with fat on the flanks, back, or waist, liposuction may be added for enhanced results.

Women often want to recover the body changes which occurred with children and undergo a “mommy makeover” which includes a tummy tuck with breast augmentation and/or breast lift.

A tummy tuck does not remove fat around the intestines and organs inside the belly. This is discussed during your consultation and fat inside the abdomen can limit the available results. Weight loss in some patients is encouraged prior to surgery to give the best possible outcome.

How is the procedure performed?

  • Surgery is usually performed at Plastic Surgery Aesthetic’s nationally accredited surgical suite. Surgery may be performed at a local surgery center depending on individual health status
  • Anesthesia providers monitor your heart & lungs and keep you comfortable during surgery
  • Incisions are placed very low on the abdomen from hip bone to hip bone. An incision also encircles the belly button. Incisions are modified if only minimal contour problems are present or if the excess fat extends further around to the back.
  • The muscles of the abdomen and waist are tightened and the excess skin and fat below the belly button is removed. Stitches close the skin and a drain is placed.
  • Some patients elect to have liposuction, breast augmentation, or breast lift at the same time.

What is normal recovery?

Most patients are treated as outpatients and do very well healing in the comfort of their own home. Patients experience moderate discomfort for the first several days which is relieved with prescription medications, ice and Tylenol. Patients wear a compressive support garment for the first several weeks, and are back to most activities within 2 to 3 weeks and most return to work in 3 weeks. You should expect to be back to full, unrestricted activity within 6 to 8 weeks.

What are the expected results?

A firmer, flatter, and smoother abdominal contour is the usual outcome. A tummy tuck restores the muscle structure to improve posture, strength and muscle tone, decreasing the waist diameter from the inside. Improved self confidence and body image are common findings after a tummy tuck.

Patients who intend to lose significantly more weight, or plan future pregnancies, should discuss these issues at the consultation so you understand what effect this could have on your results.

In some instances, liposuction is combined with abdominoplasty for enhanced results or may be performed several months prior to or after your tummy tuck. CoolSculpting™ can also be used postoperatively to enhance results or as an alternative to abdominoplasty for some patients.

Are there potential complications?

Tummy tuck is a common surgery but no surgery is without potential risks. The majority of these are minor. Smoking increases your risk for numerous complications and may lead to your surgery being canceled. General risks of any surgical procedure can be found on our information page by clicking HERE.

Complications specific to tummy tuck may include:

  • Scarring
  • Change in sensation
  • Delayed fluid or swelling
  • Delayed healing or tissue loss

Additional FAQs

What do you do with my belly button?

Your belly button stays attached and where it is, but is brought through new skin when the tissues are re-draped. If you have had previous hernia surgery around your belly button or other tummy surgery, Dr. Kennedy occasionally creates a new belly button.

How long do I have to wear my compression garment?

Patients wear their compression garments for comfort and to minimize swelling 20-23 hours a day for the first three weeks and then 12 hours a day for the following three weeks. Some patients wear their compression garments longer, while others stop wearing their garments sooner.

When will my swelling be gone?

It will take a full 6 months for all swelling to resolve. The majority of your swelling will resolve within 6-8 weeks, although some people seem to have very little swelling and others hold swelling for much longer. Activity can prolong swelling and most people know if they are ‘swellers’ or not.

Will you be able to see my scar?

All scars start dark pink, firm and noticeable, but with time your scar should be flat, white and thin. Dr. Kennedy tries to keep the scar low and hidden by most clothing and swim wear. We will discuss scar massage at your 3 week appointment which helps scars soften, flatten and whiten faster!

Men | EK Plastic Surgery

Men

Plastic surgery is as popular with men today as it is with women. Many of the same procedures performed on women can also be done on men - liposuction, tummy tuck, eyelid surgery, removal of excess breast tissue, and CoolSculpting® among others. Because men and women differ physically, we often need to approach the various procedures differently.

Schedule a consultation

Why do men consider plastic surgery?

Men who would like to turn back the effects of age often consider cosmetic surgery. The most common areas of interest for men wanting cosmetic surgery include a younger looking face, a trimmer waistline, or less prominent breasts.

Liposuction/Body Contouring

As men age, fat accumulates around the abdomen and flanks (“love handles” or “spare tire”) and in the breast area. Since male skin tends to be thicker and more elastic, liposuction can produce a very effective change in the contour of these regions. If loose and hanging skin with poor elasticity is present, an abdominoplasty may be needed.

Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia, an overgrowth of breast tissue in men, is quite common and can affect one or both breasts. The procedure to treat gynecomastia removes fat and/or breast tissue using a combination of liposuction and excision of the firm tissue. Sagging breasts more often require the removal of skin as well, resulting in a chest that is flatter, firmer, and better contoured. In some cases, CoolSculpting® can provide equivalent results without surgery, scars, or anesthesia.

CoolSculpting

CoolSculpting® is the first FDA-cleared technology to selectively remove fat without surgery, scars, and little to no downtime. Patented cooling technology is used to safely, comfortably, and effectively target unwanted fatty deposits. Treatments are performed in our state-of-the-art office and you can resume normal activity immediately after treatment.

Face

Most men want a relaxed and rejuvenated appearance without the “operated” look or visible scars. Receding hairlines and facial hair can affect options and results. The most common facial surgery in males is blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) and liposuction under the chin. Other facial surgery performed in males includes full face and neck lift, brow lift, or skin resurfacing.

Most people want to look the way they feel inside, but don’t want the downtime associated with some surgical procedures. Non-surgical and minimally invasive procedures can erase lines and creases, refill volume lost from the aging or weight loss, remove age spots or rosacea and remove excess fat from the abdomen, arms, legs, and under the chin. The goal is to make you look as wonderful as you feel and avoid downtime which would keep you from your best life.

It is important to be treated by a physician trained in all of the options you may want to consider. A board-certified plastic surgeon has the training, experience, and background to ensure the best possible outcome. Supervision. Experience. Training. Review the article, "Finding the right plastic surgeon for you".

Dr. Kennedy only uses FDA-approved products and technology.

Botox®

BOTOX® is the first product of its kind, FDA approved for temporary improvement in movement lines on the face. BOTOX® is used by both men and women who want to smooth fine lines and wrinkles by relaxing very specific facial muscles while still having the ability to show expression. The effects of BOTOX® are remarkable and last approximately 4-6 months. Botox® is also used to reduce underarm sweating. For additional information on BOTOX® visit www.botox.com.

Botox® can be used in the:

  • Forehead
  • Crows feet
  • Between the eyebrows (glabella, 11’s, bunny lines, frown lines)
  • Armpits to reduce sweating
  • Other locations are occasionally treated (neck bands)
  • Minor improvements in brow position

Botox is a simple, in-office procedure without any downtime. You can immediately return to work, exercise, and all other activities. Results are not apparent for 3-6 days. There are very few risks, but some people will have slight headaches or a heavy feeling for the first several days. If not enough Botox® is used, an incomplete block will be present, there may be more movement in one area compared to another.

Semi-Permanent Fillers

A refined facial appearance by softening lines and creating a natural look and feel. Fillers can improve lost volume and provide better structure and support of the facial soft tissues. Age, weight changes, smoking, and sun exposure can all contribute to developing lines and wrinkles. There are several classes of FDA-approved fillers which can be used in many areas. A consultation with Dr. Erin Kennedy will help you determine which product is right for you.

Body Contouring

Women or men who have lost significant weight are often left with drooping, sagging skin. No amount of exercise or diet will remove this excess skin, but surgery can remove the excess skin and provide a more attractive, toned contour.

Schedule a consultation

Who considers Body Contouring procedures?

Massive weight loss is like deflating a balloon. Skin becomes saggy, loose, and misshapen. Some pockets of fat remain. No amount of exercise or diet will remove this excess skin.

Men or women who see this excess skin often consider arm reduction or thigh lift, circumferential trunk lift, breast lift and augmentation, and face and neck lift. After massive weight loss, patients can see an improvement in blood pressure, diabetes, energy, breathing problems, and arthritis but they are reminded of their old, heavier body each time they look in the mirror and see sagging, draping skin.

Surgery can remove the excess skin and provide a more attractive, toned contour. Several procedures are often required to address all areas of concern and bring results as close to your goals as possible.

Most insurance does not cover these procedures. We are happy to help you check with your insurance carrier if you feel coverage may be available.

It is important to have realistic expectations about what the procedure can achieve.

Body Contouring Procedures

Circumferential Trunk Lift
Circumferential trunk lift, also called belt lipectomy, removes hanging, draping skin from the abdomen and back.

Arm Reduction
Arm reduction(brachioplasty) removes skin and fat (bat wings) to give a thinner, tighter arm contour. Incisions are modified if excess skin extends onto the chest.

Thigh Lift
Medial thigh lift is used to remove draping skin from the upper thighs. A thigh lift can be extended under the buttock or combined with abdominoplasty or circumferential trunk lift depending on where the excess skin is located.

Tummy Tuck
Designed to remove skin and fat from the lower abdomen and tighten the tummy muscles, a Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty) provides a flatter tummy contour, fewer stretch marks, and a better clothing fit. Incisions are placed to be as discreet as possible.

How is the procedure performed?

  • Incisions vary depending on the areas of concern and degree of skin and excess fat.
  • Muscles are tightened, and excess skin and fat is removed. Stitches and a drain are placed.
  • Surgery is performed in either the office or hospital operating room depending on the procedure(s) performed and the extent of the surgery. Many patients go home the same day, but occasionally an overnight stay is required. General anesthesia is used and surgery takes 2 to 6 hours depending on the degree of contouring required, or combination of procedures performed.
  • Some patients find that combining procedures optimizes recovery time, resulting in less time off work.

What is normal recovery?

Most patients experience moderate discomfort, which is relieved with prescription medications. Compressive, support garments are worn for 4 to 6 weeks. Patients are back to most activities within 2 to 3 weeks, depending on their job requirements. They are typically back to full, unrestricted activity within 4 to 6 weeks.

What are the expected results?

You can usually expect to have thinner arms, or thighs with removal of much of the excess skin. Patients who intend to lose additional weight should discuss this with Dr. Kennedy. As with all contouring procedures, realistic expectations are very important to ensure your expectations are in line with expected results.

Are there potential complications?

All surgery carries some risk. Body contouring after weight loss has become common and safe, but no surgery is without potential problems. These are generally minor, such as scarring, a change in sensation, unevenness or delayed fluid, and swelling. Rarely, more significant problems can occur.

Breast Augmentation | EK Plastic Surgery

Breast Augmentation

An enhanced, feminine contour can improve self-esteem and self-confidence, and provide more shapely curves. Breast augmentation enhances the size, shape and contour of the breasts with FDA approved implants – it is more common today than ever, and Dr. Kennedy utilizes a variety of the latest techniques to reach your goals.

Schedule a consultation

Who considers a breast augmentation?

Women wanting a fuller, more feminine, and more youthful appearance to their breasts often consider breast enhancement. Throughout life, many things can affect the appearance and a woman’s satisfaction with her breasts. These include:

  • Age
  • Pregnancy or nursing
  • Weight fluctuations
  • Gravity

What is a breast enhancement?

Breast augmentation is more than simply enlarging the breasts. Breast augmentation offers customization that produces a look that is natural, balanced, and beautiful. The operation is more popular now than at any time in its history. Goals of breast augmentation include:

  • Creating beautiful cleavage and fullness in the breasts
  • Achieving symmetry between breasts that differ in size or shape
  • Re-creating fullness after breasts have become deflated as a result of pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight loss
  • Fulfill a desire to obtain feminine curves to fit into desired clothing or create proportion with the rest of the body

Dr. Kennedy only uses FDA-approved implants to enhance the size, shape, position, and symmetry (evenness) of the breasts. Saline (IV solution) or silicone gel (also referred to as Gummy Bear or simply gel) implants are placed behind the breast tissue to improve the shape and volume of the breasts. A variety of implant styles and incisions can be used. Breast augmentation does not “lift” the breasts. If droop or unevenness is significant, a breast lift may be required as well to provide a result as close to your vision as possible.

How is the procedure performed?

  • Surgery is generally performed in our nationally accredited surgical suite.
  • Anesthesia providers monitor your heart & lungs and keep you comfortable during surgery
  • A small incision is made to place the implant. The incision is generally under the breast but can be placed around the nipple or in a manner to lift and reposition the breast.
  • An implant is placed in front or behind the chest wall muscle and inflated to the desired effect.
  • Surgery is performed using general anesthesia. The surgery takes approximately 2 hours and patients return home the same day.
  • Breast Lift (mastopexy) can be performed at the same time as augmentation if breast droop exists. This involves slightly different incisions.

What is normal recovery?

Patients are generally back to work in less than a week. Prescription medications are used during this time to relieve surgical pain and muscle cramping. Bandages and displacement exercises in the early postoperative period help keep the implants in the proper position. Upper body, cardio, and more vigorous activity can be resumed in 4 to 6 weeks.

What are the expected results?

Results are custom-tailored to each patient as everyone has their own desires. Fuller, more shapely breasts are the usual result. Patients see better proportions, a more feminine shape, improved self-esteem, and self-confidence.

Are there potential complications?

Breast augmentation is a common surgery but no surgery is without potential risks. The majority of these are minor. Smoking increases your risk for numerous complications and may lead to your surgery being canceled. General risks of any surgical procedure can be found on our information page by clicking HERE.

Complications specific to breast augmentation may include:

  • Change in nipple sensation (increased, decreased or numb)
  • Possible effect on future lactation (breast feeding) and or mammogram
  • Future breast growth (if young) or volume loss (with age or weight loss)
  • Uneven shape or size between the breasts.
  • Firmness from scar tissue around the implants (capsular contracture)
  • Leak and deflate
  • Unintended movement or unevenness.

Additional FAQs

Do you offer both Saline & gel implants?

We do. There are advantages and disadvantages to each type of implant and neither is right for everyone. Dr. Kennedy will review both types of implants and help you decide which is best for your personal situation.

How often do they rupture? Is there a warranty for the implants?

Implants are not considered ‘lifetime’ devices, but many women never experience an implant rupture. All current FDA-approved implant manufacturers offer lifetime replacement of their implants, so if the implants rupture the company will replace your implants.

Effect on cancer detection/ mammography?

After breast augmentation, you will have a third ‘displacement’ view when you have routine mammography. If your implants are placed behind the muscles of the chest wall, mammograms continue to screen back to the chest wall muscle. If your implants are above the muscle, there can be some concern if all of the breast tissue is being viewed. New 3D and digital mammography have led many radiologists to report much less ‘loss’ after implants or other breast surgery.

Can I still breastfeed after implants?

There is no reason you should not. This is something you should discuss with Dr. Kennedy at your consultation and may affect what incision is used. Scars around the nipple would have more potential effect on future lactation and sensation than scars underneath the breasts.

Do they need to be replaced?

If your implants are not ruptured (deflated), are even, soft, and are providing the effect you desire, then there is no reason you need to replace them.

Do you do transgender augmentation?

We are committed to helping all patients achieve their best selves possible. We have helped numerous MTF women on their journeys and hope they felt welcomed and accepted as they pursued this portion of their lives with us.
